The fishermen and -women of Ibo Island, Mozambique, are poor by standard measures of economic welfare, and they have limited access to the materials and consumer products that most people take for granted. But they make ingenious use of the industrial artifacts they manage to get ahold of. The image at left shows fisherman Momade Cabo with a diving mask, spear gun, and octopus. The diving mask he is wearing was made out of the blown inner tube of a truck tire, the blown inner tube of a car tire, a broken window pane, a beat up old aluminum cooking pot, some fishing line, and a bit of sodder. |
